The sterident is a dry heat sterilizer and below is a steam Autoclave.
We
have three methods of sterilzation in the office: Autoclave
is the gold standard. It subjects instruments to 250 degree
of heat and 15 pounds of pressure. Our autoclave is monitored
for efficency by an indepependent lab on a weekly basis. All
instruments are scrubed, or ultrasonicaly cleaned, bagged
and then autoclaved. Each bag has a strip that indicates if
the proper sterilization conditions were met.
Dry heat is very similar to a typical oven. The instruments
are baked at a high heat for 30min. This is only usable
on stainless steel instruments. Again, the bags have an
indicator strip that shows when sterilization conditions
have been met.
Chemical is the least reliable of the methods to sterilize.
It is reserved for items that would be destroyed by the
1st two methods. Usually soft plastic, and delicate instruments
are placed in this gluteraldehyde solution, such as cidex.
Items are left in this chemical overnight.
