Veneering
Veneers (Porcelain Laminate Veneers) are the strongest way to repair
a broken portion of tooth. Generally, they correct the same problems
addressed by bonding. Veneers can cover up discoloration, repair
a damaged tooth or change the shape or size of the teeth. They are
much stronger than bonding and unlike bonding, will not stain or
lose their luster.
Veneers are a two appointment procedure. The first appointment is
for preparation. A small amount of enamel is removed from the front
of the tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to
the lab and the lab makes a new front, much like a false fingernail,
out of porcelain. This new front is tried in, bonded, trimmed and
polished at the second appointment.
Seating
a Veneer is time consuming and can last for hours, but it is usually
quite worth the effort. Compared to crowns, veneers are a more conservative
method for restoring a moderately fractured tooth. They average
from $400 to $1100 (depending on complexity) per tooth and will usually last four or more years.
