The laser we use in an Nd:Yag made by Sunrise Technologies. It is a 3watt free running laser. The wavelength is in the near infrared and is commonly used in eye surgery and bulk tissue removal. Darkly stained, or red and inflammed tissue absorbe its energy the best.

The primary use for a laser is in soft tissue surgery. Some dentists can use it to aid in bleaching teeth; but, it is no more effective then the simpler and cheaper take home methods allthough it is much quicker............

At the lower energy settings local anesthetic often is not required.

MORE ABOUT LASERS

Cerec2 is a CAD/CIM machine that makes crowns, inlays, onlays from solid blocks of ceramic. Most of the time a crown can be made in one day and often during the same appointment. A very sophistacated infrared optical sensor takes the "impression" using parallax technique to obtain an accurate image of the prepared tooth. Then, the computer, with guidance from the operator, designs, and mills the crown or "filling".

MORE ABOUT CEREC2

Air abrasion

Air abraision is the newest concept in dentistry. It is the use of a highly controlled and precise mini-sandblasting unit. Gently and quickly tooth structure is removed, often without the need of lidocaine and without the noise of the drill.

The unit we have is the Sunrise Technologies Associate.

intra-oral

Our intra-oral camera is an acucam with a panasonic video printer. We use it for documentation and patient education.

dental lab

We have a very basic in house dental lab. Primerly it is used to trim and pour models, Adjust and polish crowns, bridges and dentures; and, make simple denture repairs.

phnaromic x-ray

Our Panoramic X-ray machine is a Yosida Kaycor 10 su model. It is useful in viewing wisdom teeth, Gross TMJ anatomy, and overall condition of the teeth and surrouding bone. Typicaly this maching is seen in oral surgeons and other specialists office's. We use it to provide a full diagnostic work up when needed.

digital radiography

Digital Radiography is our newest tool.It allows us to take x-rays with 1/3 the normal Radiation and read the x-ray within seconds instead of waiting up to 10 min for film. The unit we have is made by Dexis. The sensor is manufactured by Rockwell (the aerospace company). All the images are stored on our file server and the pcmcia card can be moved from one room to another.

nitrous oxide

Nitrous Oxide is available to all patients on request. We have a standard mobil unit by MDT/Mekesson, langhing gas, when administered properly, is useful Adjanet in relieving stress and making the dental experience more pleasurable. We like to monitor our patients with a pulse oxcimeter during Analegesia. This tells us the persons pulse rate and amount of oxygen in their blood.

    Bioterrorism References

The Following list was provided to me from Norwalk Hospital and was mailed to all attending staff members. I Felt that it was important enough to make avaliable to all on my web site.

  • American College of Physicians Web site with short written summaries addressing the medical aspects of bioterrorism.

  • Medical Management of Biological Casualties The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases publishes this web site. It is basically a medical manual for medical personnel to use as a concise guide to medical prophylaxis and management of biological casualties.

  • CDC Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response This website, sponsored by the Center ofr Disease Control, provides information about chemical and biological agents, press releases, training, contacts, and other important information dealing with the public health aspects of bioterrorism.

  • Center for Civilian Biodefense Studies Sponsored by Johns Hopkins University, this website provides up-to-date information on the biological agents of greatest concern and explores ways to prevent and respond to their use on civilians. This site serves as a repository for relevant news, conferences, background reading, and other bioterrorism related resources.

  • Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) This website reports on the agency's support for assessing and improving the U.S. health care systems capacity to respond to possible incidents of bioterrorism. The $5 million initiative focuses on clinical preparedness of health care providers and health care systems, is part of a broad effort by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other Federal agencies against bioterrorism.

    What Is CEREC?

CEREC is a high-tech instrument that helps dentists restore damaged teeth.

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.

    How Does CEREC Work?

First, the dentist prepares the damaged tooth by painting a thin layer

of reflective powder directly on the tooth's surface. Using a special

camera, the dentist then takes a picture of the tooth. No need to take a

messy impression and send it to the lab. The dentist works from this

photo, which is actually a pin-sharp optical impression of the tooth.

Computer aided design technology helps the dentist design the

restoration from the optical impression. The design is done chairside

on a color monitor. Patients can watch the dentist design the new

restoration right in front of their eyes!

Then computer aided manufacturing creates the restoration while the patient waits. The tooth is milled out of a block of ceramic material that matches the patient's tooth color. Computer aided manufacturing uses a high-speed diamond bur and a disk simultaneously to mill a precise restoration. The milling takes about 10 minutes. Finally, the dentist bonds the newly milled restoration to the tooth using an adhesive.

What Kinds of Procedures Can It Perform?

    Partial and full crowns

    Veneers

    All other single-tooth restorations

What Are the Advantages CEREC Offers?

    The dentist performs the restoration

in a single session, usually in less than one hour

No need for the dentist to make an

impression and send it to a lab

No return visits for the patient

The restoration is natural looking, as it is

made out of tooth-colored ceramic material

    Ceramic material is biocompatible,

    high-grade, anti-abrasive and

    plaque-resistant

    Metal-free--no silver-colored fillings

Allows dentist to save more of

    the healthy tooth

    Extremely precise

    Is This a New Technology?

No. CEREC has over a decade of clinical research and experience to support the technology. The manufacturer of CEREC has relied on user input and research to improve the product over this time. Over four million restorations have been performed worldwide. Only within the last several years has it been possible to create a full crown and the technology been within reach of most US dentists.
